The Work of the Friends
The Friends of CIAA supports the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives in many forms including funding projects and initiatives.
Believing that design excellence improves both our community and the world, the Friends work to bring the archives out of the vault and into the community by supporting exhibits and public programs. One such project was funding the exhibit “Anchor, Move, Connect,” at the 411 Gallery in 2019 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the installation of Henry Moore’s Large Arch on the library plaza. CIAA then turned that physical exhibit into an online exhibit so that it could reach an even wider audience.
Maintaining design records for future generations to use is an active process requiring specialized materials, equipment, staffing, and services. Needs range from purchasing archival folders to house architectural drawings to contracting with conservators to piece back together one-of-a-kind documents. An ongoing project funded by the Friends is photographing newly acquired materials that would otherwise be unavailable for use because they are too fragile or too large.
Providing access to collection materials, whether in analog or digital format, is fundamental to the work of all archives. To ensure access to materials today and in the future, the Friends fund professional staff who process collections, create and manage metadata, and who provide reference services.

2026 Board of Directors
Rachel Bourne, President
Rachel Bourne is the Vice President of AI Transformation for Jacobs Engineering. A city’s architecture reveals how it thinks, how it collaborates, and how it grows. Columbus is a rare example of systems-thinking expressed through design —where civic vision, industry, and creativity intersect. Preserving this legacy protects not only physical structures, but the culture, intention, and leadership that shaped our community. Rachel serves as the Friends of CIAA president; she joined the board in 2020.
Jeff Bergman, AICP, Vice President
Jeff Berman is the Director of the City of Columbus – Bartholomew County Planning Department, a division of City of Columbus government, where his team guides long-term community growth and development. A graduate of Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning, he earned a bachelor’s and professional degree in urban and regional planning. Jeff joined the Friends of CIAA in 2022 and serves as the vice president. A long-time resident of Columbus, he is passionate about Columbus’s future and CIAA’s role in documenting, sharing, and promoting design excellence in community.
Carrie Fulp, AIA, Secretary
Carrie Fulp works as a Senior Architect for Force Design, Inc. here in Columbus, Indiana. Over her career, Carrie has worked on several large projects including the St. Bartholomew Catholic Church and School addition, Indianapolis Zoo Waters Building Renovation, and the IU-Indianapolis Campus Center Building. Growing up in Columbus surrounded by great architecture, she understood how great design can elevate one’s environment. But it wasn’t until she moved away for school and work that she realized how not every community enjoys this amenity. Columbus is a place everyone can learn from, and the Archives helps to record what started as an incredible vision from J. Irwin Miller. To have a record of Columbus’ buildings, art, landscape, and design is a true treasure, and she is passionate about preserving and continuing this legacy through serving on the Friends of CIAA board.
Emily Dill, MLS, Treasurer
Emily Dill joined the IU Columbus Library in 2003 and has served as its Executive Director since 2012. She received a BA in Psychology from Ball State University and a Masters of Library Science from IUPUI. Emily has served on the Friends of CIAA Board in various capacities since 2006 and currently serves as Treasurer. She found CIAA founder Lynn Bigley’s enthusiasm for protecting and promoting Columbus’s rich architectural history contagious and joined the board bringing her library and archives experience.
Brett Boezeman, PhD
Brett Boezeman currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations for the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation. He holds a Ph.D. in K-12 educational leadership. Brett joined the Friends of CIAA in 2022 to help support the mission and vision of the Archives. He believes having a resource such as CIAA available to students, architects, and others with general interest is both a unique and highly valuable opportunity. His appreciation for the rich architecture of Columbus has only grown since joining, and he’s happy to dedicate time and energy to help others realize this benefit as well.
Jenni Dill-McGill, JD
Jenni Dill-McGill is a Senior Gift Planning Attorney at the Indiana University Foundation where she helps maximize private support for Indiana University. During her time working at the Bartholomew County Historical Society, she attended sever Friends of CIAA board meetings and was drawn to the organization’s mission. In 1964, J. Irwin Miller said he would like to see Columbus become “the very best community of its size in America.” He went on to say, “We would like to see it become the city in which the smartest, the ablest, the best young families anywhere would like to live … a community that is open in every single respect to persons of every race, color and opinion; that makes them feel welcome and at home here ….” Jenni and her family have benefitted tremendously from this vision, and she’s passionate about serving on this board to help in a small way to carry Mr. Miller’s legacy forward for future generations. Her children have grown up with friends from all over the world surrounded by art and world-class architecture, and it has uniquely prepared them to be citizens of an ever-changing world.
Maddie Paul
Maddie Paul is the Marketing Director at Bullet Property Management, and she’s thrilled to have joined the Friends of CIAA board in 2025. Originally from Atlanta, GA, Maddie now proudly calls Columbus, IN her home. Her journey with CIAA began during her time as the Marketing & Community Relations Manager at the Bartholomew County Public Library, where she had the privilege of discovering the incredible wealth of knowledge and history housed within CIAA. She’s passionate about amplifying the work of CIAA and celebrating how it continues to inspire and influence creatives worldwide. She looks forward to contributing to the ongoing success of this exceptional institution and to working with the Friends of CIAA to further its mission.

Friends of CIAA History
In 2005, community activist and former City Council member Lynn Bigley established the organization to ensure the long-term care of CIAA collections that, although located in BCPL’s Cleo Rogers Memorial Library, lacked professional staff and an operating budget. Through her advocacy, Bigley established an endowment that would allow the collection to expand and be accessible to the public.
To ensure the continued growth of and access to the collection, the CIAA Board transferred all collection materials to the Bartholomew County Public Library in 2018. Changing its name to the Friends of CIAA, the Board continues the work started by Lynn Bigley.
To honor her advocacy, the Friends of CIAA Board awards the Lynn Bigley Volunteer Award to individuals who contribute their time and expertise to CIAA. Past recipients are Rhonda Bolner (2012), Jim Nickoll (2013), Don Nissen (2015), Eleanor Rust (2016), and Steve Risting (2017).
