Columbus hosts AIA Town Talk

On April 9th, 2010, the CIAA hosted a town talk featuring Mr. George H. Miller, FAIA. Mr. Miller is a managing partner of Pei Cobb Freed in New York, and current president of the American Institute of Architects.

Prior to the community talk, Rhonda Bolner, president of the CIAA, had the privilege of taking Mr. Miller on a private tour of our local library, which was designed by I. M. Pei. While there, we also went into the actual Archive, and Mr. Miller was able to look upon the original Pei architectural drawings for the library project.

Mr. Miller also visited city hall, and presented a citation to Mayor Fred Armstrong, and the residents of Columbus. Columbus City Hall was designed by Edward Charles Bassett, of Skidmore Owings and Merrill.

Following dinner, the town talk community event was held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church (St. Peter's was designed by Gunnar Birkerts).

Anthony J. "Tony" Costello, FAIA Irving Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Ball State University, served as moderator for the evening's event. He and Mr. Miller discussed good architectural design and how it influences the inhabitants of the community. Over 125 attended the event, and were encouraged to ask questions and make comments on how they felt about living in such an architecturally rich city.

The evening's event was videotaped, a portion of which can be seen on YouTube >
