This is the first in a multi-part series designed to introduce you to our wonderful city and how it came to be listed as number six in architectural design by the American Institiute of Architects.

On this disc, you will get an inside look at how the Cummins Foundation program came to be. We will introduce you to four world renowned architects who have been awarded the Pritzker Prize: I.M. Pei, Richard Meier, Kevin Roche, and Robert Venturi. All Pritzker Prize winners, each have designed significant buildings here in Columbus.

REMEMBERING J. IRWIN MILLER DVD

On August 17th, 2009, the Bartholomew County Public Library hosted a panel discussion about the late J. Irwin Miller. Mr. Miller was one of the driving forces for architecture in Columbus, beginning in the late 1940's. He and his wife, Xenia, were also great patrons of the arts, and helped bring many public pieces of sculpture to our community. This panel discussion, with input from the community, was recorded, and is being made available by the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives. CIAA contracted Dean O'Neal to professionally record the event. Mr. O'Neal currently does work for the Associated Press, ESPN, and others.

A native New Yorker, Tony Costello  earned his first of two Bachelor of Architecture degrees when, in 1965, he was the first American to graduate from the School of Architecture at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, which he attended as a Fulbright Scholar. His second was in 1966 (w/ honors) from Pratt Institute in ’66.

He earned a graduate degree in urban design in 1967 at Columbia University where his master’s thesis critic was Aldo Guirgola, FAIA, architect for Columbus East High School, and a classmate was Michael Ross, FAIA, design architect w/ HHPA on the COHA Building. He also completed a year of post-graduate studies in planning law and public policy at Harvard and MIT, which he attended as a Lilly Faculty Fellow.

A registered architect in Indiana since 1971, he established in 1976,and maintains to this day, a sole-practitioner, Muncie-based, limited-practice firm of COSTELLO + ASSOCIATES.
